Getting a facelift, rhinoplasty, or another facial procedure is a great way to achieve a desirable facial aesthetic. However, maintaining those great results still takes work, especially if you want to keep up those results as you age. According to Joseph Russo, MD, a Newton Centre, Mass.-based plastic surgeon, the most important step to take after undergoing a plastic surgery procedure is to embrace non-surgical treatments, such as fillers, lasers, and radiofrequency treatments.

The number one thing to do when speaking to your plastic surgeon before or after your surgery is to have them determine what your skin type is. Everyone is born with different genetics, and some people are born with different skin thickness than others. Thinner skin can be easily damaged, so these patients may need more help maintaining their surgical results with skin tightening procedures, as they don’t have much dermis. A thicker dermis will do well with many treatments.

The second your surgical procedure is done, your skin starts to age. The aging process comes with collagen loss, which makes the skin thinner. Many non-surgical treatment devices now work to create collagen synthesis. Lasers, radiofrequency and ultrasound procedures all do this by creating an injury in the skin to create more collagen, “making the skin thicker and therefore tighter.”
