Liposuction

Liposuction was the top plastic surgical procedure of 2016 and can be performed on most parts of the body. While not a solution for permanent weight loss, liposuction targets the parts of your body with excess fat. Dr. Wendel uses the procedure to slim and reshape your specific problem areas, restoring your confidence in your body’s contours.

Abdominal or Flank Lipo

RealSelf Liposuction

If you are someone who is uncomfortable with how much fat is stored on your tummy and sides, you might be a good candidate for abdominal liposuction. Abdominal lipo is usually for someone who has good skin quality but feels their tummy is too large and needs reshaping. Lipo in the abdominal area can recontour and shape you waist line making your favorite jeans fit again. Flank liposuction is popular for both men and women.

Arm Lipo

Have you ever waved your arm saying goodbye and wished you could wave goodbye to that drooping fatty tissue under your arms? A typical candidate for arm liposuction is someone who is near their ideal body weight, but can’t seem to get rid of the extra fat from their arms. Arm liposuction is used to remove the fat under the arm area.

Hip or Thigh Lipo

If you have lumpiness or irregularities in the shape of your hips and thighs, you might be a candidate for liposuction. Sometimes, no matter how much you exercise and diet, your hips and thighs are still disproportionately large compared to the rest of your body. Thigh liposuction surgery can reduce the prominent thigh fat and take away burdens such as the rubbing together of the inner thighs when you walk.

Leg or Calf Lipo

Liposuction can also be performed in certain instances on the inside of the knees and the calves. Speak with Dr. Wendel to see if you are a good candidate.

Neck or Chin Lipo

Just as fat deposits can accumulate on other parts of the body, they can collect in your neck. Many people requesting neck liposuction want to remove the excess fat from under the chin and neck area, sometimes referred to as a turkey neck or double chin. Through neck liposuction, you can look younger and improve the definition in the lower cheeks, chin and neck.

Suction Lipectomy Surgery

Dr. Wendel will perform the surgery using anesthesia in a fully accredited surgical facility. Dr. Wendel will make tiny incisions into the fatty areas on your body. Using small stainless cannulas he will perform the liposuction. The fat is removed through very small incisions and by suction with the cannula. Following lipo, Dr. Wendel will go over recovery instructions in order to minimize any discomfort.

Liposuction Revision

If you are unhappy with your results from a previous procedure or experienced complications, scarring or asymmetry, Dr. Wendel offers liposuction revision surgery. Depending on your body, Dr. Wendel may recommend combining lipo revision with other surgeries such as tummy tuck.

Power-Assisted Lipo (PAL)

Dr. Wendel performs PAL, which is identical to traditional lipo and adds a tool that vibrates to accelerate fat melting.

Lipodissolve | Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy or lipodissolve is not performed at Dr. J. J. Wendel Plastic Surgery.

Lipodissolve involves a series of medicated injections that is claimed to melt away unwanted small, localized pockets of fat. It is also known as mesotherapy, lipolysis, injection lipolysis or lipostabil. The ingredients used in lipodissolve vary depending on the physician and the area being treated. Common ingredients include a chemical cocktail of phosphatidylcholine | deoxycholate (PCDC), multivitamins, alpha lipoic acid (ALA), plant extracts and other enzymes. Phosphatidylcholine is a soybean extract; deoxycholate is a bile derivative. Phosphatidylcholine is FDA-approved to break down blood fats that may increase the risk of heart disease. It is not approved for injection or any other purpose. Sometimes, other ingredients are added, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics and hormones in the cocktail. Part of the problem, is that there is no standard ingredient list. Many of the individual ingredients are not FDA cleared on their own, much less, as part of an injectable chemical mix.

For those who participate in lipodissolve, a doctor injects the medicated mixture into unwanted fat layers and connective tissue. The injection is done awake, usually with no anesthesia. The medication is supposed to initiate a chemical reaction and physiologic response to dissolve localized areas of fat. Benefits are supposed to be seen within 3 weeks of treatment and a series of treatments are recommended 4-6 weeks apart. Downtime is reported as none.

Selling points for mesotherapy are:

  • A non-surgical alternative to liposuction
  • A series of minimally invasive injections that dissolve fat with less cost and no downtime

However, there are potential problems:

  • Lipodissolve is not FDA approved.
  • The benefits and safety profile are not established.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is currently studying the effectiveness and safety of the procedure. Presently, neither the ASAPS nor the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommends the use of lipodissolve or mesotherapy.

ANVISA, the Brazilian equivalent of the FDA, has banned the use of phosphatidylcholine-based injectable products  because they have never been approved for cosmetic use. Health Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the FDA, has ordered physicians to stop marketing and stop administering these types of products to patients.

For all these reasons, lipodissolve or mesotherapy is not recommended at this time.
