Acne scars are a troublesome side effect of severely inflamed breakouts. They are the result of an overproduction of collagen when the body attempts to repair damaged skin. These scars can be categorized as either atrophic or hypertrophic scarring. Atrophic scars appear as indentations in the skin and typically can be filed into three categories: icepick, rolling, and boxcar. These three categories can usually be found on the forehead, cheeks, temple, and along the jawline. Hypertrophic scars are the opposite, usually appearing as bumps on the nose or chin instead.

Erasing acne scars can be difficult, but procedures such as Morpheus8, microneedling, and various laser treatments are highly-effective at smoothing bumps and indentations, and clearing skin. Morpheus8 is a non-surgical procedure that uses radiofrequency and microneedling to fractionally remodel and contour the face. After undergoing this procedure, clients can expect to see their acne scars diminish, revealing a more radiant and smooth appearance.

Microneedling can also aid in scar reduction by breaking down scar tissue and increasing the production of new collagen. By utilizing microscopic needles to create miniscule punctures in the skin, the body’s natural healing ability is awakened in the targeted areas, causing the skin to appear youthful and smooth once again.

Laser treatments are also an effective way to heal acne scars. Using intense bandwidths of light, laser treatments penetrate the deepest layers of skin to remove hyperpigmentation, smooth skin, and encourage healing. There are many different types of laser treatments such as fractional laser resurfacing, full-surface laser skin resurfacing, and micro laser peels that can be used to clear a person’s complexion, and improve texture and tone.

Once acne scars form, treatment can be done at any point. Studies have found that the fresher the scars, the more effective the treatment will be.
