With the world moving closer to a pre-pandemic state, the growth seen in 2021 continued for facial plastic surgeries and cosmetic treatments in 2022. Recently, The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) released data from their annual survey. According to this study, 58% of surgeons reported an increase in bookings and treatments since the previous year.
This data showed that 82% of the procedures conducted in 2022 were mildly invasive, with the remaining being surgical. Out of all the procedures done, the two most common minimally invasive treatments were neurotoxins and dermal fillers, while the three most common surgical procedures were facelifts, blepharoplasties, and rhinoplasties.
With the resurgence of many ‘90s trends, buccal fat removal has made a comeback as well, with many A-list celebrities choosing to undergo the procedure. High, sculpted cheekbones have become popular once again, with surgeons reporting a 15% increase in the amount of buccal fat procedures conducted in 2022.
This survey also concluded that Gen Z has yet to have a major financial impact in the aesthetic marketplace. However, this generation’s influence on plastic surgery trends is certainly still felt. 79% of facial plastic surgeons agree that the desire to look presentable in photos, like selfies, is a driving factor for facial procedures. With this motive, lip lift procedures saw a 3% increase in popularity since 2021. Alongside lip lifts, blepharoplasty procedures have also seen an increase in popularity for the same reason of appearing more presentable in photos.
