MICRONEEDLING

Dr. J. J. Wendel Plastic Surgery is pleased to offer microneedling treatments. Our aesthetic specialists apply a micropen to the skin that induces collagen production, helping the skin to appear healthier and more youthful. Microneedling can be used to treat a number of concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, scarring, melasma, hyperpigmentation and more. This treatment improves skin health by driving the best products deeper into your skin, giving enhanced results and healthy, glowing skin. Platelet-rich plasma can also be used for faster recovery and even better results.

MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling, also called skin needling, is a treatment that uses very tiny needles to make small, superficial channels in the skin. This process causes a controlled injury to the skin, which stimulates your skin’s formation of collagen and elastin. With newly formed collagen and elastin, your skin appears rejuvenated and improved. The medical terminology for this type of therapy is named Percutaneous Collagen Induction Therapy (PCIT).

Microneedling is used to improve the following conditions:
  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • New and old scars
  • Stretch marks

The microneedling pen can also be used to treat pore size, skin texture and quality, as well as to break up old scar tissue and deliver medication deeper into the skin. It is not limited to a specific area and can be used all over the head, face, neck and body. Many individuals have enjoyed the benefits of microneedling, which can be performed on all skin types. Unlike laser skin resurfacing, there is not a risk of skin pigment changes, such as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Skin needling is not recommended if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Use of Accutane (isotretinoin) within 3 months
  • Have open wounds of the skin
  • Had radiation therapy to or through the skin within 1 year (in the area of treatment)
  • Recent skin infection, shingles, or HSV (herpes simplex virus) outbreak
  • Are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Have a history of keloid or thick scar formation
  • Have a history of poor wound healing

ECLIPSE MICROPEN EVO

We use an automated micro pen, the Eclipse MicroPen Evo, to perform your treatment. The Eclipse MicroPen Evo has 14 very small 32-gage medical grade needles arranged in a fractional pattern. The needles are stainless steel and non-allergenic to human tissue. Each needle tip is disposable, only used once, and then it is discarded. The depth of the microneedle penetration can be adjusted superficially or more deeply depending on the treatment necessary.

MICROPEN PROCEDURE

During your skin needling treatment session, your skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied for your comfort. Certain skin products may be applied during the treatment. We then use the MicroPen to treat your skin with variable speed and adjustable needle depth. An antioxidant Vitamin C serum or Intensive Soothing Complex is applied afterward.

It is normal for your skin to appear slightly red and inflamed for about 1-2 days after the procedure. Microneedling is safe and effective. The risk of infection is very low and unlikely. We recommend that you use protective sunscreen. It is okay to wear makeup after the procedure.

We recommend a minimum of 3 treatments with treatments spaced a minimum of 4-6 weeks apart. After the first treatment, you will start to notice that your skin appears rejuvenated and smoother. Best results are seen 2-3 months after the treatment. Acne scar treatment can be difficult and requires at least 5-6 treatments.
