Patients often come in asking about their eyelids when the real source of their tired or heavy-lidded look is actually higher up: the position of the brow itself. As the forehead skin loses elasticity over time, the brow gradually descends, pushing down on the upper eyelid and creating a hooded, fatigued appearance, even in patients who sleep plenty and aren’t tired at all. A brow lift addresses the source of that problem directly, rather than treating the eyelid alone.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a brow lift, also called a forehead lift, reduces forehead wrinkles, softens frown lines, and repositions the eyebrows into a more youthful, alert position. You can read more in ASPS’s overview of brow lift surgery.
This distinction matters because the two procedures solve different problems, and it’s a common point of confusion during consultations. If gently lifting the eyebrows with your fingertips makes your eyes look noticeably more open and awake, that’s usually a sign the brow position, not excess eyelid skin, is the main issue. Patients with this pattern who pursue eyelid surgery alone are often disappointed with the results, because the eyelid skin was never really the problem.
Full details on how brow position is evaluated during a consultation are available on the brow lift procedure page.
A brow lift is typically performed using an endoscopic technique, in which several small incisions are hidden behind the hairline, allowing the surgeon to reposition the underlying tissue with minimal scarring. For patients with more significant forehead skin excess or a very high hairline concern, an open technique may be recommended instead. In some cases, a brow lift is combined with eyelid surgery or a facelift for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Most patients take about a week off from work, with swelling and bruising around the forehead and eyes gradually resolving over the following two to three weeks. Numbness or tightness along the scalp is common initially and typically improves over the following months. Because the endoscopic technique uses small, well-hidden incisions, resulting scars are minimal and easily concealed by hair.
For patients who’ve been treating tired-looking eyes with eyelid fillers or eyelid surgery without getting the result they wanted, a brow lift is often the missing piece.
