The Decline of “Instagram Face” & More Obvious Plastic Surgery

July 1, 2025 Tags: , , , , ,

A woman has a consultation for cosmetic injections.

What has become known collectively as “Instagram face” or “pillow face”, is when someone appears to have had excessive amounts of filler injected into their face. Large amounts of filler can lead to a puffy looking face with little ability to be expressive. When cosmetic injections became more popular, many injectors had limited experience and in abiding by patient requests they injected filler in quantities that are no longer typical. From the late 2000s to late 2010s , this became the norm. Since then, the trends and aspirations of patients have changed. People are getting fillers dissolved, opting for medical grade skincare, laser treatments, and more to achieve a youthful, but not overly full, appearance.

The Dissolving Phenomenon of the 2020s

Within the past 10 years, more and more patients are going in to see their injection provider and wanting a less filled look. In some cases, that includes dissolving current filler, whether in full or just in some places. While all dermal fillers cannot be dissolved, both Juvederm and Restylane, two hyaluronic acid-based fillers, can and have been. Some fillers are made of silicone or other materials that are more difficult to get rid of, sometimes ending up needing surgery to completely remove.

Injectables like Botox and HA fillers however, wear off overtime and Botox specifically doesn’t require a removal of any kind. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are currently the most popular injectable fillers because they are not only dissolvable but are also naturally metabolised by the body over time.

Small But Mighty Injections

Now, filler is being placed in smaller doses, in very specific areas, based on patient goals and face shape. For experienced injectors, like the ones at SKINHAUS Beauty in Nashville, the approach is better described as “less is more” with techniques that are exact in placement so less filler is needed to make the impact the patient desires.

Starting small, and with dissolvable fillers, allows patients to adjust to their results and decide if they want to maintain that amount and placement or make adjustments.

The trend of using less filler and wanting a more natural, subtle result from filler comes after many people online shared their cosmetic injection experiences. Others on social media have been quick to comment how much better and more like themselves people are looking after having certain fillers dissolved. Whether it’s a viral video asking if your lips look too big on your face or a before and after subtle filler injections, the reactions have leaned more positive when people are staying true or returning more to their natural features.
