Whether you’ve been getting neurotoxins like Botox of Dysport for years or just started recently, it’s good to learn what signs mean you should switch injectables. Each brand of neurotoxin is slightly different and reacts to people’s skin differently, meaning what works for some may not work for others. There’s also the chance that your skin has gotten used to the neurotoxin and therefore no longer gives the results you want. Whatever the case may be, asking your provider and talking through all the product options every once in a while could be beneficial! Check out some of the most common brands of neurotoxins and learn more about how to know when to switch below.
Like mentioned before, there are a few signs that it may be time to switch from one neurotoxin to another. One of the main reasons to switch is if it’s no longer giving you the effect or impact you’re looking for. With consistent injections every few months over the course of a few years, it’s not unlikely that your body will learn to metabolise it quicker or your muscles will adjust to it. Your skin goals are also likely to change over time. You may decide you want a faster or more intense effect from your injections. While this could sometimes be solved by increasing the amount of product and spots that are injected, sometimes switching may offer a better change. In general, it’s best to address your concerns with your injector and together you can decide if the structure of a different neurotoxin better suits your needs.
Botox is probably the first neurotoxin you heard of and oftentimes is used as a blanket term to refer to all neurotoxins. However, Botox Cosmetic is a brand of neurotoxin and is different from other brands, like Daxxify. Some key differences between the two include the duration of results, the cost, and the approved uses. Daxxify typically lasts around six months versus the three to four months for Botox. They also work in different ways, with Botox blocking the release of acetylcholine while Daxxify stabilizes it. Botox may also cost less than Daxxify, however when calculated with the amount of recurring treatments, cost may be about even. Daxxify’s approved uses are solely for forehead lines, AKA glabellar lines. Botox is approved for wider use, including glabellar lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.
Dysport and Xeomin are also two well-known brands of neurotoxins, similar in effect to Botox and Daxxify but again with some small differences. Xeomin provides results in three to four days and is great to use in precise areas because of its low level of diffusion. Dysport on the other hand has a quicker onset, just two to three days, and diffuses much wider, leading it to be great for larger treatment areas. Both brands of neurotoxin are similar in that they last around three to four months. Relating them back to Botox, one unit of Xeomin is roughly equivalent to one unit of Botox, but one unit of Dysport is roughly equivalent to two and a half or three units of Botox.
Each brand has its own qualities that could make a difference when choosing which you want to use, but none are vastly different or better than the other. Switching between them can offer a more dramatic result, less often injections, and target different areas.
