Plastic surgeons are studying a new approach to breast reconstruction in which they place implants on top of rather than under the pectoral muscles. This places the implants just underneath the skin where breast tissue naturally resides. Surgeons believe that this pectoral reconstruction will lead to more natural-looking results, and is a less invasive and less painful procedure for some cancer survivors.
