Good News for Women With Breast Cancer: Many Don’t Need Chemo

This year, there is expected to be 260,000 new cases of breast cancer. However, according to a major international study, researchers have found that 70% of women with breast cancer can skip chemotherapy. The data indicated that endocrine therapy (the hormone-blocking drug tamoxifen and other related medicines) can lower the risks of recurrence, new breast tumors, and death from breast cancer. One of the study’s authors, Dr. Ingrid A. Mayer from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said: “We can spare thousands and thousands of women from getting toxic treatment that really wouldn’t benefit them.”
