With so many people working with technology and the ever increasing day-to-day usage by everyone, “tech neck” and general posture and neck struggles have become normal. However, reminding yourself to sit up straight or put down the phone can only do so much. Now, there are a myriad of products and services meant to combat these issues, including chiropractic visits, posture correcting bras, and more. But what if Botox could be of use? Since Botox Cosmetic was first introduced, the uses have widely expanded to include places other than the face like the trapezius and masseter muscles.  Keep reading to learn about the potential of Botox being used for neck and back pain as well as posture improvement.

Common Uses for Botox

In the beginning, botulinum toxins, AKA Botox, were used to correct crossed eyes and decrease eye spasms. While it was being used for that purpose, doctors realized it could have cosmetic applications as well, leading to the common ways we see it used today. Botox Cosmetic is typically used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the glabellar area, as well as the outer eye, around the mouth, and forehead. It is also utilized for lip flip procedures to relax muscles around the upper lip and give a fuller appearance without filler. Botox for Muscle Relaxing in the Jaw and Neck

In the past 15 years, the use of Botox in other muscles in and around the face has become more common. For example, it is used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and relax the trapezius muscles for a slimmer shoulder and neck. TMJ disorders involve the masseter muscles that run from the back of the cheek to the front of the jaw and interact with the jaw joints, causing pain. To reduce this pain, Botox has been injected into the masseter muscle to relax it, and is now a somewhat common treatment for TMJ disorders. Trapezius muscle Botox, also called “Trap Tox” or “Barbie Botox”, is used to relax the muscle in the upper back and neck, providing relief for pain and muscle tension in the area. Botulinum toxin injections in this area also create a more elongated and slim appearing neck and shoulders.

So What About Botox For Back Pain & Posture Correction?

People often suffer from poor posture due to overactive neck and back muscles, misaligning your body and sometimes causing back, neck, or shoulder pain. The idea behind injecting a neurotoxin like Botox into these areas is that the product would relax the muscles, bringing down overactivity, lessening neck strain, and lowering shoulder elevation. From stress, to ergonomic habits and beyond, tightness and discomfort in these areas is not uncommon. Utilizing a product like Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin can assist those struggling with chronic headaches from muscle imbalance, and general pain or aches, in turn improving posture and relieving pain.
