What to Know: Liquid vs. Surgical Rhinoplasty & Injectable Fillers

Woman has her face mapped for a rhinoplasty

You’ve probably heard of Rhinoplasties, AKA nose jobs, and injectable fillers like Juvederm. In recent years, these two have come to form a new type of procedure called the Liquid Rhinoplasty. Whether you’re ready to go under the knife, looking for less intense alternatives, or simply curious, this is the page for you! Learn the basics of a liquid rhinoplasty versus a surgical rhinoplasty, and how injectable filler can be used in more than just the nose.

The OG: Surgical Rhinoplasty

Surgical rhinoplasties are nose surgeries used to enhance or alter the shape, size, or angle of the nose. A rhinoplasty can also be used for medically necessary reasons, like fixing an obstructed airway. If you’re looking to have a nose job done for medical reasons, you can often also have them adjust the appearance of your nose. At Dr. J. J. Wendel Plastic Surgery, there are two incision options: closed incision and open incision. A closed incision rhinoplasty provides no visible scar but doesn’t allow for a more intense reconstruction. An open incision rhinoplasty has a small incision under the spot between the nostrils and allows for a full reconstruction if desired. A surgical rhinoplasty requires a few weeks to feel recovered and up to a year and a half to see the final, non-swollen results.

These before and after photos of patients who received a rhinoplasty surgery by Dr. Wendel show how subtle or impactful a nose job can be. In 2024, 48,423 rhinoplasties were performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This makes the procedure one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in the U.S. and will likely continue to increase.

Now however, there’s an alternative on the rise that’s less invasive, and not permanent.

The New Kid on the Block: Liquid Rhinoplasty

A liquid rhinoplasty provides a more subtle result and utilizes injectable filler to adjust the appearance of the nose. This procedure provides quick results and can be a good way to test out if you’re ready to commit to a full nose job or if you’ll be satisfied with slight tweaks. The liquid part of a liquid rhinoplasty refers to the injectable fillers that are used, typically Juvederm or Restylane. In this procedure, also called a non-surgical nose job, the fillers are injected to parts of the nose like the bridge and tip. The placement of the filler depends on what the patient would like altered, whether it’s smoothing a bump or smoothing indentations.

Uses for Injectable Fillers

You may know injectable fillers as used for filling cheeks and chins, not noses. However, fillers that are hyaluronic acid based, like Juvederm, have a range of applications. A non-surgical nose job, lip and jaw filler, smoothing frown lines and more are common uses for Juvederm, making it a popular choice for a range of treatments.
