The Bare Minimum Skincare Routine You Should be Doing Everyday

Caring for your skin is not only necessary for your overall health, but also to diminish signs of aging. With all the beauty “must-haves,” it can be easy to get lost in the aisles trying to choose the best products for the perfect skincare routine, and then there’s the issue of sticking to it. Busy schedules mean most of us only have time for a simple skincare regimen. Here is the simplest skincare routine that will ensure your skin is taken care of without taking up your time:

1. Use a gentle daily cleanser at night

Washing your face before you go to bed is vital to help your skin repair itself and prep for another day while you sleep. We recommend SkinMedica’s Facial Cleanser to remove the day’s grime, environmental pollutants, excess oil, and makeup, and to hydrate and refresh the skin.

2. Always wear sunscreen

UV rays can penetrate and damage your skin year-round, not just in the summer. The sun is responsible for 90% of the skin’s aging, so an SPF 30 – SPF 50 is one of the most important ingredients to a healthy skincare routine and the best anti-aging product money can buy. Not a moisturizer with SPF or a foundation that includes SPF — you need to apply an actual sunscreen product, even if you’re going to be inside all day, as UVA rays, which cause skin aging, can penetrate windows. We recommend Neocutis Micro Day SPF 30 or EltaMD UV Aero SPF 45 all over sunscreen.

3. Moisturize twice a day

Hydration keeps your skin looking plump and youthful; however, your skin loses hydration throughout the day. Applying moisturizer once in the morning and again at night is vital for healthy skin. Our favorite moisturizer at Dr. J. J. Wendel Plastic Surgery is the HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator from SkinMedica.

4. Exfoliate occasionally, not every day

Dead skin buildup can cause irritation, dullness, and acne. Exfoliating frees this build-up to expose the top layer of skin again. Exfoliating too much can damage your skin, but it should be a part of your skincare routine at least a few times a week. SkinMedica’s AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser is appropriate for all skin types and will gently scrub away dead skin to improve the appearance of your skin tone and texture.

5. Add an anti-aging product

Using a retinol or other anti-aging product at night will help optimize your skincare routine to help prevent wear and tear generated by environmental aggressors. We recommend SkinMedica’s Retinol Complex to stimulate collagen production and increase skin cell turnover.

6. Don’t overthink it

Skincare is supposed to be fun, and keeping it simple will increase the chances of you sticking to a skincare routine every day. With all the noise out there, it’s easy to get caught up in it, but the basics of good skincare will stay the same. You can always add something new once you feel comfortable in your current skincare routine!
