According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s (ISAPS) latest data release, liposuction is now the most requested procedure by patients. In their annual survey, ISAPS found that liposuction saw a 25% increase in 2021 since the prior year, with 1.9 million procedures performed, accounting for 15% of all plastic surgery.
Liposuction owes its newfound position to not just its increase in public popularity, but the reduction in breast augmentation operations. In the United States, liposuction surpassed breast augmentation procedures in 2021 by an albeit small 0.1%; liposuction holds the number one position at 19.1% and breast augmentation ranks second place, accounting for 19% of all procedures.
While the ISAPS report does not give any detailed information regarding the types of liposuction performed, there are a variety of liposuction procedures that patients can choose from with differing costs and recovery times. These procedures can include vaser liposuction, suction lipectomy surgery, power-assisted lipo (PAL), and liposuction revision for patients unsatisfied with their results.
Both liposuction and breast augmentation are incredibly popular procedures and will remain this way for the foreseeable future. For patients with very minimal amounts of extra fat, there are new cutting-edge procedures like Morpheus8 that provide an alternative for patients hoping to avoid surgery and still achieve their desired look. As liposuction continues to rise in popularity, we can expect more alternatives to develop, ensuring greater accessibility to all patients.
