A 33-year-old woman from Thailand recently underwent a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for skin laxity. According to a recent case study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, this treatment caused a facial nerve injury. The patient received HIFU treatment to both sides of the lower face for 200 lines at the highest energy setting. The study showed that the patient had mild facial erythema and edema immediately following the HIFU treatment, causing numbness and impaired mobility on the right side of the upper lip. Thanks to this case study, dermatologists are now more aware of the potentially harmful effects of HIFU treatments. Patients concerned about skin laxity may be good candidates for laser procedures , dermal filler injectionsEXILIS Elite treatments or plastic surgery.
