Buccal Fat Removal Explained

Unless you’re a plastic surgery aficionado, or you religiously follow Chrissy Teigen’s Instagram, you may be unfamiliar with buccal fat removal. This procedure is less well-known than breast augmentationfacelifts, and fillers, despite having been around for about 50 years, which is much longer than Botox! However, it’s still highly requested by patients, including Teigen.

All of us have buccal fat pads, which are small pockets of fat that sit in the middle of the cheeks and serve as gliding pads between facial muscles. They are present at birth and contribute to that “baby face” appearance. For some, their volume persists later in life and adds undesirable fullness to the cheek area. Buccal fat removal can be done in about 30 minutes under general anesthesia and involves removing fat pads from the cheeks to create a more contoured face. Besides some swelling and possible bruising, there is relatively no downtime, as patients should feel fine the next day.
