Cosmetic and plastic surgery has long been marketed primarily to women, but the patient population has been quietly shifting for years. More men than ever are pursuing both surgical and non-surgical procedures, and the reasons are much the same as they are for any patient: correcting something that bothers them, addressing the effects of aging or weight change, and feeling more confident in their own body.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual procedural statistics report, male patients have steadily increased their share of both surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in recent years, a trend that shows no signs of slowing.
The full national data on male patient trends is available in ASPS’s annual plastic surgery statistics report.
Male breast reduction, or gynecomastia surgery, remains one of the most requested procedures among male patients, and one of the fastest-growing. Enlarged or puffy breast tissue in men is extremely common, affecting an estimated one in three men to some degree, and it is often a source of significant self-consciousness that surgery can resolve permanently.
Liposuction is similarly popular, particularly for stubborn fat in the abdomen and flanks that resists diet and exercise. Facial procedures are also on the rise, with eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and neurotoxin treatments like Botox increasingly common among male patients who want a refreshed, natural appearance without looking noticeably “done.”
A full overview of the surgical and non-surgical options available to male patients is on the procedures for men page.
Men often approach a consultation differently than female patients, frequently prioritizing discretion, minimal downtime, and results that read as natural rather than dramatic. Anatomical differences also matter: male skin is generally thicker, and fat distribution patterns differ, both of which affect surgical planning and technique, particularly for procedures like liposuction and gynecomastia correction.
The stigma that once surrounded cosmetic procedures for men has faded substantially. What remains constant is the value of working with a surgeon who has specific experience treating male anatomy and understands what male patients are typically trying to achieve.
