En Bloc Capsulectomy Procedure

En bloc capsulectomy refers to breast implant removal with the additional extraction of thick scar tissue, or scar capsule, that surrounds the implant(s). A capsule can grow over time, and in some cases lead to discomfort or disfiguration, causing a capsular contracture. Dr. J. J. Wendel treats capsular contracture by performing en bloc total capsulectomy, which is the safe removal of the scar capsule and breast implant together in one procedure.

En bloc capsulectomy is not a cosmetic procedure; it is meant to remove the scar capsule surrounding the breast implant(s) as well as remove any scar tissue from a ruptured implant.

Types of Breast Implant Revision Surgeries

There are several different breast implant revision surgeries that Dr. Wendel may suggest for you, depending on your personal circumstances. Dr. Wendel might also recommend pairing your procedure with breast implant removal, breast implant replacement, breast lift, or breast asymmetry correction to maintain the shapeliness and vitality of your breasts.

  1. Capsulotomy: Incision into the breast pocket or capsule to surgically release scar tissue
  2. Capsulectomy: Complete surgical removal of the capsule, typically for more severe capsular contractures
  3. En Bloc Capsulectomy: Removal of both the capsule tissue and breast implant as one unit
  4. Total Capsulectomy: Removal of implants and all scar tissue, including tissue along the ribs and lungs; surgeon typically removes implants first, then removes all capsule tissue

En Bloc Capsulectomy Recovery

After an en bloc capsulectomy or any other breast implant revision surgery, Dr. Wendel will discuss your recovery plan with you to minimize as much discomfort as possible. En bloc capsulectomy is an outpatient procedure, so patients will go home the same day of surgery. Here are some important guidelines to follow during en bloc capsulectomy recovery:

● Ask someone to drive you home after your surgery and help you for 1-2 days.
● Rest your body and eat a balanced, nutritious diet.
● Add fresh fruit to your diet and drink plenty of liquids to alleviate constipation symptoms (due to decreased activity and pain medication).
● Take pain medication as prescribed.
● Walk as soon as possible to help reduce swelling and lower the chance of blood clots.
● Do not drive until you are no longer taking narcotic pain medications.
● Refrain from vigorous activity for 4-6 weeks.
● Return to work in 1-2 weeks.
● Resume social activities in 1-2 weeks.
● Shower 72 hours after the day of surgery.
● Avoid lifting more than 10 pounds for 2 weeks.

Dr. Wendel will perform your en bloc capsulectomy in Nashville, TN using anesthesia in a fully accredited surgical facility. Drains may or may not be used during your surgery.
