Over the years, cosmetic procedures have moved through trending phases, from tummy tucks to butt lifts to PRP treatments. A procedure that is now being seen more and more often is buccal fat removal, the extraction of fat around the lower face and jawline that offers a more contoured appearance. Although it can be traced back to the 1930s, within the past 5 years it has become significantly more common. Now, many celebrities are thought to have had this procedure, allowing them a more permanent change than using contouring makeup.

For those interested in how buccal fat removal works and wondering if it’s right for you, keep reading to learn more.

What Does The Buccal Fat Removal Procedure Look Like?

This procedure is considered a surgery because it requires general anesthesia, even though the incision is quite small and it is less invasive than other surgeries. Once the patient is under anesthesia, the small incision is made inside their mouth to allow the buccal fat pads to be drawn out using pressure on the cheeks.  After the fat pads have been removed, sutures are used to close the incision and the surgery is complete.

Recovery is typically quick and requires minimal aftercare, like rinsing the mouth with hydrogen peroxide to avoid bad bacteria infecting the incision site. Within the first days after surgery, there will be swelling and bruising that will fade with time. Most patients begin to see their results one month after the surgery, by six months post-op the full results should be in effect.

After swelling subsides, patients can enjoy their freshly contoured face.

What Separates Buccal Fat Removal From Other Treatments?

Buccal fat removal differs from other cheek and lower face procedures because its goal is concise and it offers a more permanent solution to a fuller face. Some patients may want their cheeks more prominent and seek injectable fillers or a lower facelift rather than buccal fat removal. Depending on your facial contours and composition, there are options to adjust your face however you please.

Fat removal is best for patients who want their cheeks to be more defined and currently have a fuller face. If you already have a slim face, fillers may be the best option for you. Facial fillers offer a more prominent looking cheek area, that in turn makes the lower face appear more contoured. Look at the before and afters for both buccal fat removal and filler to see which results appeal to you and your facial features.
