If we want to age gracefully, we know we have to eat healthy foods, stay active, and maintain an effective skin care regimen. For some, that includes regular Botox and filler injections, which treat common signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, crows feet, marionette lines, and 11 lines between the eyebrows. If you’re wondering how to achieve a gorgeous, more youthful complexion free of fine lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers are for you!

Why Get Facial Filler?

As we age, we all lose volume in our faces. This doesn’t seem like a bad thing at first; the baby fat is finally dropping off! But eventually, our cheeks start to look hollow and our skin starts to sag. Smile lines form and then deepen. If you want your appearance to reflect your youthful energy, non-surgical treatments can stall the aging process.

About Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule found in connective tissues such as cartilage. When injected, HA replaces lost collagen, leaving the skin youthful and smooth. Some research suggests it can even stimulate the production of new collagen! As we age, we produce HA in smaller quantities, but injectable filler helps plump the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

The short answer: Yes. At Dr. J. J. Wendel Plastic Surgery, we only use FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based fillers. In fact, dermal fillers are one of the most effective wrinkle treatments available. In the right hands, fillers help improve the contours of your face naturally.

If you are expecting, nursing, or under the age of 18, however, you should avoid injectables. The safety of these products when used during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years of age has not been studied and is therefore unknown.

Which Injectable Filler Is Right for Me?

Juvéderm is the #1 selling collection of hyaluronic acid fillers in the US. The Juvéderm family includes:

  • Ultra and Ultra Plus – great for moderate lines, subtle definition and volume
  • Vollure – helps improve the appearance of serious lines and wrinkles
  • Voluma – can add volume and structure to the cheeks, chin and nose
  • Volbella – helps plump the lips and erase lines around the mouth

Restylane fillers are also commonly used for the face and even the hands. These products contain nutrients that help replenish our skin, and HA usually stays right where it’s injected, dissipating slowly and safely over time.

If you would like to combine these amazing fillers to improve the appearance of wrinkles, add volume to cheeks, and create subtle definition in your lips, you may also be interested in a facial package called a liquid facelift!

Are Fillers Permanent?

Injectable filler will last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the type you choose, so you don’t have to worry about making a permanent change to your appearance. Our clients love the subtle difference it makes and regularly return for injections. Fillers are also reabsorbed by the body over time and can be dissolved, so if you’re unhappy with a previous injection, you are never stuck with your results!

Do Fillers Hurt?

Dr. Wendel’s providers apply a topical anesthetic and/or ice to the area being treated about 10 minutes before they start, and the treatment area will stay numb while filler is injected. Some fillers by Restylane have built-in lidocaine to numb the area being treated. While it’s not entirely painless per se, Dr. Wendel’s team does everything in their power to make you as comfortable as possible. You are also free to let them know if you need a break at any point during the treatment.
